The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to open the doors of its new gallery space, located in The Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts with the exhibition, Aldwyth: Work v. / Work n. — Collage and Assemblage 1991- 2009 . The exhibition begins with a reception on Fri. October 23rd, 6 - 8 pm and will run through Sat. January 9, 2010. During the reception, at 7 pm the artist, Aldwyth, and curator, Mark Sloan, will lead interested guests on an exhibition walk-through. The first public viewing of the Halsey Institute’s new space will continue with a Hallelujah Chorus performed by members of the Taylor Festival Choir, CofC’s professional choir in residence, as well as a dance performance by local Charleston dance group, Buen Aché. The exhibition opening is the first of many celebratory events for the School of the Arts' 20th anniversary.

Acclaimed cellist Natalia Khoma and accomplished pianist Volodymyr Vynnytsky will perform: J. S. Bach (Adagio, from the Toccata in C Major) Franz Schubert (Sonata Arpeggione D821), Cesar Franck (Sonata in A Major for cello and piano) and G.J. Dinicu (Hora Staccato). Both artists hail from the Ukraine in Lviv and studied at the prestigious Moscow Conservatory.

The Office of Multicultural Student Programs and Services will host its 1st Annual Community Gift Wrapping Service in the Stern Student Center Lobby from 10 AM until 3 PM beginning Monday, November 30th and ending Thursday, December 17th. Prices are very reasonable for each wrapped gift with all proceeds earned to benefit the Horizons Yearlong Program of Enrichment -“HYPE”- Student Foundation. HYPE is a new program designed to provide continuous transitioning services for underrepresented students new to the College of Charleston.

Join College of Charleston students, faculty, and staff for the 24th Annual Sottile House Tree Lighting Ceremony in front of the historic Sottile House at Green Way and College Way on Wednesday, December 2. Have your picture taken with Santa Claus between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. while listening to holiday music played by the Jazz Ensemble. The ceremony begins at 5 p.m. and includes a performance by the children of the Miles Early Childhood Development Center and a sing-along with the College of Charleston Concert and Gospel Choirs. The Sottile tree, the first electrically lighted outdoor holiday tree in Charleston, will be lit for the 43rd time. The tree was first decorated with over sized lights in 1921 and was lit for the next 20 years, stopping during the blackout imposed on the country following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In 1986, the grandchildren of J.C. and Alberta Sottile Long turned the lights on once again and they have been lit in a ceremony every year since.

Please join Rabbi Rosenbaum for a three-part class exploring, The Eight Chapters, Moses Maimonides’ introduction to Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers). Maimonides is one of the great scholars of Jewish history, and arguably, The Eight Chapters is the most concise description of Maimonides’ philosophy. What makes this book unique is that it resonates with philosopher and non-philosopher alike, and gives a compelling suggestion of how to live Jewishly to the best of our abilities. In a sense, it is one of Judaism’s ultimate “self-help” books, and it is sure to resonate with all of us as we consider our daily habits and behavior.

Questioning is a central tenet of Judaism, and Jewish disputation is as common as Jewish theology or Jewish creeds. A significant number of contemporary Jews are without core religious beliefs, like God’s existence, divine revelation, and ultimate judgment, but still identify themselves with Judaism, although as questioners. American Jews are far more likely to be secular in their beliefs and actions than Orthodox, observant, or traditional. Silverman will speak to that reality and maintain that Humanistic Judaism is a viable and growing alternative and that the Jewish organizational structure should reflect that growing reality.
