The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to open the doors of its new gallery space, located in The Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts with the exhibition, Aldwyth: Work v. / Work n. — Collage and Assemblage 1991- 2009 . The exhibition begins with a reception on Fri. October 23rd, 6 - 8 pm and will run through Sat. January 9, 2010. During the reception, at 7 pm the artist, Aldwyth, and curator, Mark Sloan, will lead interested guests on an exhibition walk-through. The first public viewing of the Halsey Institute’s new space will continue with a Hallelujah Chorus performed by members of the Taylor Festival Choir, CofC’s professional choir in residence, as well as a dance performance by local Charleston dance group, Buen Aché. The exhibition opening is the first of many celebratory events for the School of the Arts' 20th anniversary.

No, he wasn't Jewish. We're watching this one to understand the different ways that Jewish and African-American comedians presented themselves to their audiences. This concert film shows what has been described as not just the best performance by the best African-American comedian, but as simply the best standup performance of all time. It would be impossible to establish that claim, but it might also be difficult to fully understand the history of American standup comedy without watching this film. (1979, 78 minutes)

Are there ethical principles for arguing with others? Are there limits or restrictions on what we can or should say? In particular, do our arguments have to be sincere? Do we have to mean what we say? Is there anything wrong with basing our arguments on what other people believe? To answer some of these questions, I will compare the ethics of arguing as it applies to lawyers, judges, and to the rest of us as citizens in a democratic society.

Micah Schwartzman is Associate Professor, University of Virginia School of Law. His articles have appeared in Political Theory, Virginia Law Review, and Politics, Philosophy and Economics. He was formerly clerk for the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University. He has been a contributor to the blog Crooked Timber, and written for the New Republic.

Join Rabbi Sytner for a lively three-part discussion on the best-selling book, The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism, by Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin. This book speaks to Jews and non-Jews of all walks of life, and addresses key questions that we all wonder about. This class will cover the fundamental elements of Judaism including: morality, the existence of God, Zionism, Anti-Semitism, intermarriage, Christianity vs. Judaism, organized religion, and the role of Jews in today’s world. Written by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh in 2003, this especially dark black comedy tells the tale of Katurian, a fiction writer living in a police state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories, and their similarities to a number of bizarre child murders occurring in his town. The displays brought by SCEEP will show individuals how earthquakes work, provide general information on the geology of SC, and explain hazard maps of the area. Children will get the chance to build their own structure and test is on our shake table, learn about seismometers, and can take home coloring books about earthquakes.

Maimonides is one of the great scholars of Jewish history, and arguably, The Eight Chapters is the most concise description of Maimonides’ philosophy. What makes this book unique is that it resonates with philosopher and non-philosopher alike, and gives a compelling suggestion of how to live Jewishly to the best of our abilities. The narrator of one of Philip Roth’s recent novels describes blacks and Jews as “the most unalike of America’s undesirables.” Yet the interaction between these two minorities cannot be limited to the sense of the chasm that may have separated them, and cannot even be confined to the historic "alliance” that helped with such heroism to achieve a more democratic and just society. There have been empathetic and emotional bonds as well, and even an emphasis—sometimes in literature, sometimes in autobiography—upon identification, in which the line dividing Jews and blacks is blurred. That has made Jewish self-definition, as well as residence in the United States, much more complicated and more interesting, and therefore worthy of reflection.

The College of Charleston Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will host 1st grade students from Orange Grove Elementary Charter School as they sell lemonade outside of the Stern Center. The SIFE team created this educational outreach project to expose 1st-3rd grade students to the concepts of entrepreneurship using a lemonade stand as a vehicle to learning. All proceeds from the sell of lemonade will be donated to the students chairty of choice, Charleston Children's Charity.

Most are surprised to encounter an ancient Jewish community that has adapted to the racial divisions of its host society. This presentation is from Dr. Stiefel’s dissertation and upcoming USC press publication about the history and preservation of the synagogues associated with the Atlantic World (1636-1822). The synagogue is a significant kind of structure to study because it represents a specific ethnic demographic that transcends international political borders in history and preservation management. This thereby provides a special opportunity to study how different societies approach heritage interpretation and historic preservation for a common building type. The Trachy Lacy Collective is a modern jazz quartet led by saxophonist Seth Trachy and drummer Russell Lacy.
