The Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston will join together with the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs to present the sixteenth annual A World of Jewish Culture at Piccolo Spoleto. Founded in 1998 to highlight Israel’s 50th birthday, the annual event celebrates Jewish cultural contributions to the arts worldwide. The Herzman-Fishman Foundation continues its major sponsorship of this annual project at the Festival; Mindy Seltzer and Norton z”l have generously supplemented the Fishmans‘ support in recent years. Los Angeles-based screenwriter and Harvard University alumnus Micah Fitzerman-Blue will return to present three international films in their Charleston debut, with a discussion to follow. Additionally, a three-part concert series is in the works, as well as an enlarged coffeehouse at Saffron Café and Bakery. The signature events for A World of Jewish Culture at Piccolo Spoleto 2013 will take place on Sunday, June 2, 2013.

Convocation is an annual celebration at which students and faculty gather to celebrate the official opening of the scholastic year. Originally, “convocation” meant a gathering of the clergy or the divisions of a diocese; however, at the College of Charleston, the word and the event have evolved from their ecclesiastical roots to embrace the intellectual community as well. The College’s convocation welcomes new students to the liberal arts and sciences community and encourages them to consider their own intellectual journey through small group conversations with individual faculty. This occasion also serves to familiarize incoming students with the College’s academic traditions as well as the institution’s history, symbols and mottos. As part of convocation, faculty lead students through the arch at Porters Lodge and convene in the Cistern Yard as a new community of scholars. Students officially sign "the book." The inscription on that historic arch reads (in Greek) "Know Thyself."

Fun Home by Alison Bechdel is The College Reads! Book for the 2013-2014 school year. Alison Bechdel’s presentation will be open to students, faculty, staff and the Charleston community. Published in 2006 this award-winning book is a memoir in the form of a graphic novel. Fun Home is a coming of age story centered on Bechdel’s complex relationship with her father, a high school English teacher and director of the town funeral home (the “Fun Home”). In college, Alison comes out as a lesbian and learns her father is gay. By retelling her story, she is able to come to terms with herself, her sexual identity, and her relationship with her father. In Fun Home, Bechdel’s life story is told as a series of flashbacks. Through these flashbacks, Alison and the reader are able to reassess each situation from new and different perspectives. Throughout the book, she grapples with finding a voice and a way to tell her own story, while realizing that she’s part of other ongoing narratives—her family’s story, the tradition of literature, and the world of art and ideas.
