Room: Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art

Entitled Return to the Sea: Saltworks by Motoi Yamamoto, the centerpiece of the exhibition at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art will be a site-specific installation created entirely out of salt by the artist during his three-week residency at the Halsey Institute. Curated by Mark Sloan, director and senior curator, the exhibition will also feature a series of recent drawings, paintings, sketchbooks, a video about the artist's process and the importance of salt in Japanese culture to be produced by the Halsey Institute, and a catalogue documenting fourteen years of the artist's saltworks around the world. The exhibit is part of Spoleto Festival USA.

Lauded by The Washington Post for “bringing down the house with an aching, husky ‘I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone,’” this young French-American singer recently took home first prize in the Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition, awarded by a panel of judges—including Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Kurt Elling—who know how to spot the real thing. Wise well beyond her 22 years, Salvant is a fresh new talent not to be missed.

Drawing on a wide blend of musical styles for his compositions, he gracefully integrates classical, jazz, Celtic, or Brazilian ideas into his melodies, resulting in a rare and new style that has earned him countless international awards and accolades.

Armed with formidable talent—a fingerpicking championship at Winfield, a John Lennon Songwriting Contest win, and the haunting voice of Emma Beaton—they’ve forged a sound that’s sweet, full of swagger, and thoroughly fresh.

It’s rare for a young musician to earn comparisons to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis and even harder to find one who has entirely redefined an instrument by his early thirties. But ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro, who performed to a sold-out crowd during the 2009 Festival, has done just that, molding the traditional Hawaiian instrument into a complex and bold new musical force. With lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Shimabukuro’s eclectic mix of jazz, rock, folk, classical, and traditional Hawaiian music creates a sound that is technically masterful, emotionally powerful—and utterly sensational.

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.”

Convocation is an annual celebration at which students and faculty gather to celebrate the official opening of the scholastic year. Originally, “convocation” meant a gathering of the clergy or the divisions of a diocese; however, at the College of Charleston, the word and the event have evolved from their ecclesiastical roots to embrace the intellectual community as well. The College’s convocation welcomes new students to the liberal arts and sciences community and encourages them to consider their own intellectual journey through small group conversations with individual faculty. This occasion also serves to familiarize incoming students with the College’s academic traditions as well as the institution’s history, symbols and mottos. As part of convocation, faculty lead students through the arch at Porters Lodge and convene in the Cistern Yard as a new community of scholars. Students officially sign "the book." The inscription on that historic arch reads (in Greek) "Know Thyself." Convocation for the fall 2012 semester will be held on Monday, August 20, 2012.
