Event Description:
"Exploring an Active Volcano One Mile Below the Sea’s Surface"
Geology Professor Leslie Sautter will speak about her research studying a deep sea volcano. The University of Washington is constructing a National Science Foundation supported $250 million deep sea observatory off the coast of Oregon. The observatory includes many instruments that will study processes on, below and above the seafloor continuously for the next 25 years. One of the primary sites being studied is Axial Seamount, an active volcano whose summit is 1 mile deep! This volcano has incredible hydrothermal vents, earthquakes, and eruptions of extensive lava flows. The geology and biology of this amazing, extreme environment will be highlighted in the talk.
