Three Rabbis Walk into a Bar: Some Thoughts on Jewish Humor
Start Date: 1/20/2013Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Date: 1/20/2013End Time: 11:30 AM

Event Description:
From vaudeville to film, over the last hundred years Jewish humor has been embraced by American culture in the form of self-deprecating and anecdotal performers and comedians. What makes a joke a Jewish joke? When is a joke anti-Semitic? David Benatar will discuss these and other questions, illustrating his proposed answers with relevant jokes (and possibly adding a few gratuitous ones).
David Benatar is professor of philosophy and head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa. Benatar is most recently the author of The Second Sexism: Discrimination against Men and Boys. He is best known for his advocacy of antinatalism in his book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence, in which he argues that coming into existence is a serious harm, regardless of the feelings of the existing being once brought into existence, and that, as a consequence, it is always morally wrong to create more sentient beings. Benatar taught philosophy at the College of Charleston for two years and is returning by popular demand after a short absence.
