Event Description
The narrator of one of Philip Roth’s recent novels describes blacks and Jews as “the most unalike of America’s undesirables.” Yet the interaction between these two minorities cannot be limited to the sense of the chasm that may have separated them, and cannot even be confined to the historic "alliance” that helped with such heroism to achieve a more democratic and just society. There have been empathetic and emotional bonds as well, and even an emphasis—sometimes in literature, sometimes in autobiography—upon identification, in which the line dividing Jews and blacks is blurred. That has made Jewish self-definition, as well as residence in the United States, much more complicated and more interesting, and therefore worthy of reflection. |
